Semena Santa, also known as Holy Week, is a special week in Nicaragua. As I have mentioned in previous entires, Nicaragua is highly dominated by the Catholic Church. This means that Christians holidays are celebrated in a very much visible way. The easter here is celebrated in totally different way from for instance in Norway where Easter is among other things associated with jumping Easter bunnies, colorful chocolate eggs or egg hunts. Instead of being an advertised holiday like in most western countries, Semana Santa is a part of Nicaraguan culture.
The celebration lasts for an entire week. It starts on Palm Sunday before the official Holy Week starts. The whole week is a combination of indigenous rituals and religious traditions that commemorates the death of Jesus and celebrate his resurrection. Its was incredible to see how they celebrated Jesus and Easter. In the entire week it was possible to see parades and processions on the street. Kind of like how we celebrate the National Day of Norway. The difference was instead of waving with Norwegian flag and singing the national theme, they carry Jesus, the Priest of the Church and Maria on their shoulders while saying prayers. It was very strong and gave a lot of impressions.
