Buenos Aires is described as a sensual satisfaction. This is some of my absolute favorite things to enjoy in the Argentine capital.

Jacaranda Trees in Bloom

Every spring Buenos Aires turns into an immense purple flower. A glimpse of the bloom of the city’s more than 11 000 astounding Jacaranda trees is reason to visit the city alone. The indigenous plant to South America blooms in November.

Carlos Thays Botanical Gardens

With a beautiful greenhouse in Art Nouveau style in the center, the Botanical Garden is home to over 5500 species of plants. The triangular shaped park also has sculptures, a butterfly park, and Roman, French and Oriental gardens.

See a passionate protest

The weekly protests in Buenos Aires include drum circles, singsongs, and massive banners. The ardent porteños have clearly good reasons to take to the streets, and the level of political involvement is high. Most occur in front of Casa Rosada, along Avenida de Mayo, around the Obelisco monument and the National Congress. Every Thursday the last 40 years, the Madres de Plaza de Mayo, has protested circling the square May Pyramid monument in Plaza de Mayo.

Mercado de San Telmo

The city’s oldest neighborhood San Telmo is known for the old colonial architecture, cobbled streets, antique shops, the beautiful square Plaza Dorrego with tango daily and the enormous Sunday market, feria. However, there is a little sister feria, the indoor Mercado de San Telmo, located in Defensa 963. The marked was designed by architect Juan Antonio Buschiazzo (1845-1917) who also contributed to the grand Avenida de Mayo. Build in 1897 as a great fruit and vegetable market made to cater the needs of the many immigrants arriving, it is today a place of vintage clothes, antiques, cheese and flowers. The Coffee Town placed in the big cupola in the middle offers one of the best coffees in town.

Ice cream

A abundance of heladarias (ice cream parlors) is to be found in Buenos Aires. Though this marvelous part of the argentine culture was started by Italian immigrants bringing gelato during the 19th century, in my opinion, this latino variant has devolved to be better than in the country of origin. My absolutely favorite is Rapa Nui in Recoleta.

Reservea Ecológica

A haven for birdlife, the 350 hectares ecological reserve is the most bio-divers and biggest green space in Buenos Aires. Go on foot or bicycling and do a picnic with the views of Rio de la Plata river. The reserve is on the eastern side of Puerto Madero. It is open every day except Monday and when it rains.

Rosedal

Located in the Parque Tres de Febreo in neighborhood Palermo you find Rosedal – the Rose Garden. With 8000 different roses and 93 different rose species, it is in my opinion one of the best places to go for a stroll.

Horse Race

The outstanding Hipódromo Argentino de Palermo from 1876 is the place to get to get a glint of the rich horse race culture in Argentina.

Weekend trip to Uruguay

Argentinas neighboring country, Uruguay, is only a one-hour boat-trip from Buenos Aires. Order your trip online in advance with one of the many boat companies and spend a day or two in the UNESCO World Heritage city Colonia de Sacramento, a picturesque city found by the Portuguese. If your have more time before or after the studies, exploring Uruguay means getting to know the many beaches and small fish-towns along the Atlantic coast.

Camping
Waking up in the middle of nowhere. Always a hit to go camping.
