The humid subtropical climate of Pokhara is a refreshing change from the cooler Scandinavian climate you might be used to. With some preparation, the combination of warm rains and intense sunshine creates a dynamic and exciting environment. In this blog post, I’ll share what you can expect from the weather and give you some tips on how to deal with it!

Weather overviews:

For fall semester students, you will begin with experiencing the tail end of the monsoon season (June to September). During this time, daytime temperatures hover around 25°C to 35°C, while nighttime temperatures range from 18°C to 22°C. The heavy rainfall and humidity are typical, but don’t worry—the rains gradually taper off by mid-September, giving way to clearer skies. As the monsoon retreats, you’ll enjoy more of Pokhara’s stunning post-monsoon views of the Annapurna range. This season brings cooler daytime temperatures between 20°C to 28°C and nighttime temperatures “as low” as 12°C to 18°C. The late autumn season in Pokhara is considered one of the best times to visit due to moderate temperatures and clear views of the surrounding mountains, making it optimal for trekking.

The spring semester brings comfortable, mild temperatures as winter fades. In early spring (March), daytime temperatures range from 20°C to 25°C, with nighttime temperatures dipping to 11°C to 15°C. As the season progresses, temperatures rise, reaching 30°C by May, with warmer nights around 18°C to 22°C.With the increase in temperature, it will also become more humid, indicating the onset of a new monsoon season. The spring season features frequent clear skies, blooming flowers, and mild temperatures. Whether you choose to study in the fall or spring, you will have lots of opportunities to go trekking and explore the outdoors!

Here are some recommendations for dealing with the weather.

Sun and Warmth:

  • The UV index is much higher than in Scandinavia, so apply sunscreen daily and pack a good pair of sunglasses.
  • Opt for breathable, lightweight clothing. Key words here are linen/cotton materials, loose shirts, flowy skirts, etc.
  • Use the pool at Heritage Hotel for a cool off. The pool is just outside your classroom which is under 10 minuets from Hotel New Darshan (your accommodation during your stay).
  • Stay hydrated: drink water (and electrolytes). Bring a water bottle everywhere!
  • If you are lucky enough to have air conditioning in your room, it can definitely be worth the 500 NRS fee per day (equivalent of about 40 NOK) as an investment for better sleep.
  • A hand fan can come in handy for quick relief from the heat.
  • It can become very hot at the beginning of hikes, so bring an extra shirt and a pair of shorts to change into. You will get cold fast when sitting down after all the sweat.

Humidity and rain:

  • Keep the fan on in your room as much as possible maintain airflow. This can prevent dampness, smells, and mold.
  • Have a lightweight waterproof jacket or poncho. You may bring one if you have one. Otherwise, it can easily be found in all trekking shops, but the quality might not be as good as authentic jackets from back home.
  • Always carry an umbrella—it’s useful for surprise showers and can double as sun protection.
  • For rainy days, sandals or flip-flops are ideal, as they dry faster.
  • Drybags and/or rain covers for your backpack can be beneficial for keeping your belongings dry.

Colder temperatures:

This goes especially for trekking. In the mountainous areas it will naturally be cooler: the higher altitude, the colder. A general rule is that it will become 0,65°C to 1,0°C colder per 100m elevation gain.

  • If you plan to go trekking it can be nice to have thermal underwear, especially for sleeping in.
  • Bring a few pairs of wool socks and a wool T-shirt!
  • A wool sweater or lightweight down jacket will keep you warm during chilly evenings.

Staying flexible and packing wisely will help you enjoy Pokhara’s weather, whether you’re in the mountains or exploring the city. The diverse climate offers an incredible opportunity to experience nature in all its forms—from rain-soaked landscapes to sunny, clear mountain views.

I hope this guide helps you make the most of your time in Pokhara!

Best,
