Our journey from Norway to Costa Rica was an exciting, but challenging transition for us as students. Yet, together, we found solace in each other’s company, taking on this new adventure with care and courage.

Our exploration began in the jungles of Manuel Antonio National Park, where beautiful trees and huge waterfalls created a breathtaking landscape. As we hiked along the park’s trails, we were intrigued by the diverse wildlife, encountering colorful toucans, playful monkeys, and cute sloths. The Park, renowned for its biodiversity, is home to over 109 species of mammals
and 184 species of birds, offering visitors a unique glimpse into Costa Rica’s natural heritage.

 

We have also visited the town of Jaco and delved into Costa Rica’s rich cultural tapestry. A visit to a local coffee company provided insight into the country’s thriving coffee industry, which plays a significant role in its economy and exports. Costa Rica is renowned for producing high-quality Arabica coffee beans, with coffee cultivation deeply found in the nation’s history and identity. Here we met with a guy called Juan, who told us a lot about the history of both Costa Rica and Jaco. His family was the first people that arrived in Jaco and settled down.

Our journey then led us to the laid-back coastal town of Dominical, where we were captivated by the raw beauty of Costa Rica’s Pacific coast. With towering cliffs and pretty beaches as our backdrop, we spent our days surfing the waves and exploring hidden coves. The town’s relaxed vibe and breathtaking sunsets provided the perfect break from our busy
days of studying and exploration.

Transitioning from the crisp, cool climate of Norway to the tropical warmth of Costa Rica was undoubtedly a change, but one that we embraced very well. The vibrant culture, diverse landscapes, and warm hospitality of Costa Rica made this transition easier, reminding us that no matter where we are in the world, we can always find comfort in the beauty of our surroundings and the company of good friends. I asked the group and gathered some tips for fellow travellers that are thinking of studying in Costa Rica!

 

Tips for Student Travelers

• Budget Wisely: While Costa Rica offers plenty of experiences, it's essential to budget
  wisely to make the most of your trip. Consider staying in hostels or budget accommodations and eat in local restaurants called “Sodas” (these are the cheapest).

  Groceries are also quite pricey here, but buying local products (rice, beans, bananas) will save you some money.

• Embrace the Pura Vida Lifestyle: Pura Vida, meaning "pure life" in Spanish, describing the laid-back and carefree attitude of Costa Ricans. Embrace this mantra during your travels, and you’ll find yourself fully immersed in the Costa Rican way of life.
• Learn Basic Spanish Phrases: While many Costa-Ricans speak English, knowing a few basic Spanish phrases can go a long way in enhancing your travel experience and connecting with locals.
• Stay Safe and Respectful: Costa Rica is generally safe for travelers, but it’s essential to be careful, especially in tourist areas. Respect local customs and traditions and be mindful of the environment during your adventures.
• Explore Beyond the Tourist Hotspots: While popular destinations like Manuel Antonio and Jaco offer incredible experiences, don't be afraid to walk off the path and discover hidden gems. You'll be rewarded with authentic encounters and unforgettable memories.

 

Our first weeks in Costa Rica has been nothing short of transformative, filled with inspiring landscapes, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality. For student travelers seeking adventure and exploration, Costa Rica offers a world of possibilities waiting to be discovered.
